Understanding Acupuncture
Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world, originating in China over 3000 years ago. Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM encompasses several other modalities: herbs and dietary advice for internal issues, and cupping or heat therapies for pain.
TCM is “alternative” in the West, but has enjoyed millennia of uninterrupted use throughout China, Korea, and Japan, and today is used in hospitals alongside Western medicine.TCM is based on the concept that disease results from disruption in the flow of the body’s energy (“qi”) and imbalance in the forces of yin and yang. Acupuncture, and the other modalities of TCM, aid the body’s natural healing processes by restoring yin-yang balance and the flow of qi.
